The Fishing Forum where Anglers Connect...
Salmon fishing in Ireland was quite productive in most areas and sea trout angling was better in many areas despite the fact that the brighter and fairly calm weather has led to lower water conditions on most of our rivers and lakes in the past week. There was some lovely salmon recorded on the Cork Blackwater at Blackwater Lodge and Lough Currane is still producing steady fishing particularly for sea trout. There was a slight decrease in catches generally in the west where numbers of fish from the River Moy were well down on previous weeks. The wet weather promised at the weekend should improve catches considerably. Bigger spring tides did help bring in more salmon and sea trout into some catchments this week.
Low water conditions prevail on most east coast rivers but sea trout fishing has improved in the last week along with a few salmon.

This month is usually a bit quieter for brown trout angling in Ireland but there were some nice catches reported from Lough Sheelin, Lough O’Flynn and Lough Arrow. Some of the days of the big annual Word Cup qualifiers produced some good trout fishing on Lough Mask but a hot calm day last Monday did hamper good fishing on the final day. Aidan Hodgins from Loughrea won the event with two nice fish to win the cup, boat and engine.
Tench continues to dominate many coarse angling catches around the country particularly at Carrickmacross and Longford.
This week’s fishing report is however dominated by lots of very good sea angling in Ireland both from shore and boat. The east coast continues to fish well with tope, smoothounds and other species reported. There is a huge report from the Cork Harbour area with a wide range of species both taken in the harbour area and out at sea in a tremendous week’s fishing. A massive 230 lb. skate at Courtmacsherry wins the Inlands Fisheries Ireland Catch of the Week. This just narrowly won the accolade as a group of anglers in Northern Ireland had a memorable day taking a monster of 193 lbs. Both great fish were tagged and released. Shore and boat sea angling is very good in the Clare area and up in Galway and the west coast there was plenty of species recorded in many boat trips. Juvenile anglers enjoyed a trip to remember at Broadhaven Bay in Mayo. There was plenty of species recorded at the annual Culdaff festival in north Donegal. More big porbeagle shark were captured and released in Red Bay in Co. Antrim. A great week for sea anglers everywhere in this holiday time in Ireland.
