For those of you who go fly fishing on Ireland's Loughs and Rivers, the following Crane fly Step-by-Step fly tying instruction should be just the ticket for the remainder of the fishing season. This step-by-step has been supplied to the angling and Fishing in Ireland website, Fishing.ie by professional fly dresser Jimmy Tyrrell of Irish Fly Craft. Jimmy has over 30 years experience tying different patterns including Irish lough, river and salmon patterns.

Fly tying Step by step

  1. Wind on the tying silk
  2. Tie in a length of spanflex for the body.
  3. Apply some vanish to the tying silk on the hook shank
  4. Wind the spanflex up the hook shank in touching turns stopping about a third of the way.
  5. Tie in a bunch of knotted legs and divide them.
  6. Select two nice well marked Cree hackle tips for the wings.
  7. Tie in the hackle tips and divide them by going between them with the tying thread.
  8. Tie in a good quality Cree cock hackle.
  9. Wind the hackle about four or five turns tie in and Whip finish and varnish the head.
