Profile Information

What kind of angling do you do?
Mainly fly fishing for trout but I really enjoy fishing for sea-trout and salmon - which unfortunately is often enough. I also enjoy coarse fishing (which I did a lot of before I really got into fly fishing) and I also like to head out on Sea Charters if the chance arises.
Introduce Yourself or the Angling Services you Offer
I started the Fishing.ie fishing forum at the end of June 2011 to connect anglers around Ireland (a large task I know). I have a software development background, but my passion is fishing. As you can see from the kind of angling I do, I mainly fly fish for trout but I'm never a man to turn away any other kind of angling opportunities. In fact, I think next season I'll put a bit more emphasis on Salmon fishing and see how I do. Lot's more to learn again! I've also started teaching myself fly tying. Mainly from books and online Videos (that's why you'll see a lot of fly tying videos on the site added by myself). Well that's it in a nut-shell. I hope this site ends up being an invaluable tool for connecting anglers and sharing knowledge and stories about the one that got away. And for the ones that didn't get away, post the photos and videos on Fishing.ie. Tight lines.

P.S. Don't be shy and drop me a message if you've a suggestion for the website. The idea of adding this introduction section came from one of own members.

Western River Basin District Bangor, Ballina & Sligo Fisheries Districts Angling report – Week ending Sunday 20/5/12 Bryan Ward reports Salmon Angling River Moy Angling on the River Moy continues to improve, with low water conditions beginning to suit the lower Moy Fisheries, which are now yielding bigger numbers of fish. The East Mayo Anglers’ water and the Cloongee Fishery, continue to record the greatest numbers, partly due to the fact that the heaviest angling effort is occurring…See More

Bold Reel

"How about you write up a blog post about these reels and tell us what's innovative about it. It certainly looks different. How does that handle work etc?"

Brian McGarvey replied to John Burton's discussion Varnish for finishing off your trout flies
"Veniards clear varnish is fine and cheap. A drop on the tip of a needle will be enough to secure the finish. You can get all fussy and make a nice shiny smooth head with a few coats, but this doesn't really mean it's better."

Brian McGarvey replied to John Burton's discussion Saddles, Necks, Capes, Collars - confusion!
"Genetic is the best for all flies.  Worth spending money on.  The feather quality is much better and there are a lot more useful feathers.  Only the small feathers near the top of Chinese and Indian capes are useful. Use cock necks…"
