Mayo’s strong fighting pike “saved” the holidays for a group of German salmon anglers from the Rhine-Ruhr region. The group of 11 anglers attended a flyfishing for salmon workshop on the River Moy organised by group leader, Rolf Renell. When salmon angling conditions deteriorated further and the anglers still hadn’t connected with a salmon, their […]

hit lough ree last tues 3rd of april sort of a practice run for the upcoming pike festival, my 14yr old son ryan and young james carroll were the comrades for the day!

the weather was particularly unkind, with low temps and changeable weather from hail to rain to sunshine! the high winds pushed us into the sheltery areas of the lake and after an hour of trolling lures and no fish and dampened enthusiasm, ryans rod went over!! "is it a good one?"  "it seems a decent fish yeah" as the fish began to tire and still no sign of it, i sensed it was going to beat his previous PB(10lbs 8oz) by a few lbs at least....

when it showed itself at the back of the boat it was bigger than 1st anticipated!!!!

weighed in at 20lbs 3oz and quickly released, ryan was well happy to say the least but unable to hold the fish and as i was eager to get her back in  he took the photos and we got her back safe and sound,

now if the festival goes anything like this it will be a great 3 days !!!!!
